How effective is hypnotherapy? Well, nothing is 100% certain but the numbers for hypnotherapy certainly look good.
And to make this blog as factual as possible I’ve put in all the links for you to read the research papers yourself.
For the sake of thoroughness and rigour the scientific articles are long and detailed so I’ve only quoted a few. But Google can find you plenty more.
My first figure is 93% success.
Alfred A. Barrios, Ph. D., presented a review in the journal "Psychotherapy: Theory, Research and Practice" and in American Health magazine, where he provided the following recovery rates for different therapies: Hypnotherapy: 93% success rate after an average of 6 sessions.
You can read his report here.

My second is 63.6% effectiveness from the US National Library of Medicine.
You can read their full report here:
The same publication found that what the question hew effective is hypnotherapy? Was applied to weight loss and obesity there was an overall success.
For more reading you can look at The Journal Of Pain. If you enter ‘Hypnotherapy’ in the search box you can read how hypnotherapy helps with conditions such as chronic pain, molar extraction, back ache and spinal chord injury.
And for a good night’s sleep The Journal of Cynical Sleep Medicine found, “62.5% of the studies showing benefits of hypnosis for sleep.”
Does the NHS recommend hypnotherapy?
The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK recognises hypnotherapy, but does not typically fund hypnotherapy. Although some patients may be referred to hypnotherapists as part of a broader treatment plan for conditions like anxiety, stress or irritable bowel syndrome.
What do psychologists think of hypnotherapy?
The American Psychological Association (APA) and American Medical Association have recognised hypnotherapy as a valid procedure since 1958.
Is hypnotherapy better than counselling?
Tricky one. There’s an overlap between all complementary talking therapies.
But hypnotherapy can bring about rapid and effective change relatively quickly. Take a look at the number of session in the diagram above. How? Through the power of suggestion and accessing the subconscious mind, hypnotherapy can help you overcome deep-rooted issues and create positive shifts in your thinking and behaviour in a short space of time.
On the other hand, counselling may take a lot longer time to yield results, as it typically involves ongoing sessions where you have the opportunity to explore and process their feelings, experiences, and beliefs.
What exactly is hypnotherapy?
It’s when you deeply relax and let me ‘talk’ to your subconscious. It only works with your agreement. There’s no trance or mind control.
And talking to your subconscious allows me to make change to your thinking and behaviours at the deepest level. You can leave smoking over eating drug addiction, stress and anxiety behind.
So what is Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy?
It’s a way of combining Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with hypnosis. CBT looks at your thought, feelings and actions and if they’re out of line. Are you hurting yourself? And how to get to a better, kinder version of yourself. Hypnosis is a way of ‘talking’ to your subconscious in a calm and kind way that makes change easier to come about.
What it isn’t.
It isn’t mind control. You’re not in a trance. At any moment you can stand up and walk out. You are fully in control.
How - and who - can I help?
How I can help is by getting you to deeply relax and walk away from what’s leaving you out of sorts, such as:
. stress
. anxiety
. a phobia
. an addiction (cocaine, ketamine, cannabis, gambling)
. you smoke
. you vape
. you want to be a better performing athlete (it’s not all about removing a negative, I can get you to perform at a higher level)
. IBS
. your chronic pain (cancer, fibromyalgia)

I call myself The Gentle Mind. Why? Because I believe we’re a better version of ourselves when we’re calmer.
A note on the image. I know, you see tranquil images like the one I've used all the time in alternative therapy rooms. But within the cliche is a truth. When you relax with hypnotherapy you can be as calm as the picture.
