This blog - Hypnotherapy for the 11+ exam - is a more explicit blog about the use of hypnotherapy for the 11+ exam than my previous blog
Why do children experience 11+ exam anxiety?
The 11+ can feel like a significant milestone for children.
Particularly when they know that the result may influence which secondary school they attend.
Even children who are usually confident can experience nerves, worry or self-doubt as the exam approaches.
There can be several reasons for this anxiety, including:
- Pressure to succeed. Children may feel that they need to achieve a certain result to secure a place at their preferred school.
- Fear of getting things wrong. The thought of making mistakes or not finishing questions can create additional worry.
- Comparison with others. Hearing friends or classmates talk about revision, mock exams or results can make children feel they aren't doing enough.
- Parental expectations: Even when parents are supportive, children can sometimes interpret encouragement as pressure to perform.
- The unknown. If your child hasn't experienced an important exam before, they may worry about what will happen on the day.
- Too much focus on the outcome. Thinking constantly about passing or failing can make it harder for a child to concentrate on the task itself. For example, worrying that if they fail they will lose their friendship circle.
A certain amount of nervousness is completely normal and can even help a child feel alert and prepared.
However, when anxiety becomes overwhelming, it can affect confidence, concentration, sleep and enjoyment of the preparation process.
This is where approaches such as hypnotherapy may be considered as part of a broader approach to helping a child develop a calmer and more positive attitude towards the 11+.
What Is Hypnotherapy for Children?
To a large extent it’s the same as hypnotherapy for an adult.
Hypnotherapy for the 11+ exam is a form of talking therapy that uses relaxation, focused attention and positive suggestions to help children develop more helpful ways of responding to particular thoughts, feelings or situations.
For a child preparing for the 11+ exam, hypnotherapy may focus on areas such as
- confidence
- relaxation
- managing nervous feelings
- developing a positive exam mindset.
So, during a session, the child may be guided into a deeply relaxed and focused state.
The hypnotherapist (me) can then use age-appropriate techniques and language to help the child explore worries and practise responding to them in a calmer way.
It is important to remember that hypnotherapy isn't about controlling your child's mind, or making them forget their worries.
Rather, it can be used to help children develop strategies for managing their thoughts and feelings.
Bear in mind this ISN’T a replacement for revision, practice papers, good sleep, healthy routines and encouragement from parents and teachers.
It’s a way to develop a healthy mindset.
How can hypnotherapy help with 11+ exam anxiety?
The 11+ can create a mixture of excitement, pressure and uncertainty for children.
And depending on your child’s nature these feelings can become overwhelming and may affect their confidence, concentration or enjoyment of the preparation process.
Hypnotherapy may help children learn to respond to exam-related worries in a calmer and more positive way.
Through relaxation techniques (for some even imagining the exams are fun), guided visualisation and positive suggestions, sessions can focus on developing useful skills such as:
- Managing nervous feelings – helping children recognise and cope with feelings of anxiety before and during an exam.
- Building confidence – encouraging a stronger belief in their ability to tackle challenges and cope with mistakes.
- Improving relaxation – teaching children ways to settle their mind and body when they feel under pressure.
- Developing a positive mindset – helping them move away from thoughts such as “I can't do this” towards more constructive ways of thinking.
- Supporting concentration – relaxation and focused-attention techniques may help a child feel more settled and able to concentrate on the task in front of them.
- Preparing for the exam day – visualisation can allow children to mentally rehearse arriving at the exam, settling into the room and approaching the questions calmly.
What we’re working on is supporting your child’s emotional wellbeing and confidence alongside their normal 11+ revision and preparation.
Can hypnotherapy boost confidence and concentration?
Confidence and concentration can both play an important role when a child is preparing for the 11+ exam.
When a child feels worried or under pressure, it can sometimes become harder to focus on the question in front of them or trust in their own abilities.
And Hypnotherapy for the 11-plus exam gives techniques that help children develop a calmer and more confident approach to exam preparation.
Sessions can use relaxation, visualisation and positive suggestions to encourage helpful patterns of thinking.
Talking of visualisation, this is something most children are good at. From listening to, and writing stories, and being creative this plays to a strength I most children that adults have lost. It’s called being grown up and in most walks of life and careers it’s drilled out of us
Building confidence may involve helping a child recognise their existing strengths and develop more positive self-talk. Instead of focusing on the fear of getting an answer wrong, they can learn to approach challenges with greater resilience and remind themselves that making mistakes is a normal part of learning.
For example, if a question appears that your child has no idea how to answer, they don’t dwell and worry they move on.
Supporting concentration can involve practising relaxation and focused attention. By learning to settle racing thoughts and reduce feelings of overwhelm, some children may find it easier to focus on the task immediately in front of them.
When should your child start hypnotherapy for the 11+?
Ah, the $64 million question.
The right timing will depend on the individual child, what they're experiencing and how much time there is before the exam.
And you recognising if your child is out of sorts - not sleeping, nail biting, snappy, gone quiet.
Obviously starting earlier gives your child time to become familiar with relaxation techniques and practise using them as part of their everyday routine.
Ideally, any hypnotherapy should form part of a balanced preparation plan that includes regular revision, practice, adequate sleep, exercise, downtime and plenty of reassurance.
Don't wait until exam week if your child is struggling. Giving them time to develop strategies for managing nerves can be more useful than introducing something new immediately before the exam.
What happens during an 11+ hypnotherapy session?
Hypnotherapy for the 11+ exam is basically and age-appropriate version to help them feel comfortable and at ease.
After a chat about how your child’s feeling. We’ll figure out exactly where the help is needed:
- exam nerves dialling down
- confidence boosting
- worries about making mistakes
- difficulty relaxing.
This can help identify the areas that we can address. For example, mentally rehearsing:
- Walking into the exam room and feeling settled.
- Taking a few calm breaths when they feel nervous.
- Reading each question carefully.
- Moving on from a difficult question without becoming overwhelmed.
- Reminding themselves that they have prepared and can do their best.
How parents can support their child during 11+ preparation
Breathing exercises. These can help your child’s body feel like it does when you are already relaxed. Deep breathing is one of the best ways to lower stress in the body because when you breathe deeply, it sends a message to your brain to calm down and relax.
Practice being in the exam room. Be familiar with the space. If you can take yourself to the place that “stresses you out”. Look around. Breathe deeply. Feel tall. Change how you think and feel in that moment. Forget the past, the future. Relax in the here and now.
Exercise and smile – try being stressed then! Also getting out and exercising boosts confidence: you’re not hiding yourself away. And exercise with your child. Do something together.
Hypnotherapy for the 11+ exam - and beyond.
Going to the grammar school can bring it’s own challenges. And hypnotherapy can help with these too. Typically:
Not all your friends come with you
A new school where your child is the youngest can be intimidating
Your child may have been used to being the cleverest, but now just appears a’one of many’. They may be struggling to adapt
